1958–1994[]
The card now known as Visa was launched in 1958 in the United States, by the Bank of America. It was originally known as BankAmericard. The card was also licensed to banks in other countries, with each using localized brand names. In 1966 it was launched in the UK as Barclaycard, in 1967 in France as Carte Bleue and in 1968 in Canada as Chargex.
In 1976, all BankAmericard licensees were united under the new Visa brand.
